Overview Of The Port Of Praia

About Praia
Praia is the capital and largest city of Cape Verde, an island nation in the Atlantic Ocean west of Senegal. It lies on the southern coast of Santiago island in the Sotavento Islands group.

The city is a bustling maze of streets full of bars and restaurants, fringed by stunning beaches.

The heart of the island has a wide selection of plants, shrubs and trees. It is the natural habitat and home to many species of monkeys.

Praia has many historical sites and there are traces of Portuguese settlements throughout the area.
Most of the attractions are located in or near the old part of the city known as Plato, including the 19th century Presidential Palace, Palacio da Cultura and Praia Cathedral.

Due to their position within the winter trade wind belt, the Cape Verde Islands boast near perfect windsurfing and kite surfing conditions from late November to June.

From the old town fortress of Bateira, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the ocean.

The best city beaches are the Praia Prainha or the Quebra Canela, which is close to the Prainha quarter.

Good gift ideas include locally crafted cane baskets, carved coconut shells and woven fabrics.
The national dish of the islands is the 'cachupa' (stew). Canja de galinha' (rice soup with chicken), 'caldo de peixe' (fish soup) and the traditional 'carne guisado' (braised meat) are also very popular.
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships either dock or anchor and tender passengers ashore into the port, around 1km from the old town.

Taxis are available but be aware of illegal taxis which roam around and may take advantage of visitors.
