Overview Of The Port Of Portsmouth (Dominica)

About Portsmouth (Dominica)
Portsmouth is the second largest town in Dominica, it lies on the northwest coast, in Saint John Parish. Dominica is located between Guadeloupe and Martinique, in the eastern Caribbean.

Portsmouth provides proximity to some of the only white sandy beaches on the island.

Portsmouth was also the site of a famous battle between the French and English vying for occupation of the island.

Hiking and swimming are the number one activities on the island. An easy option is a 15 minute trail in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park which leads to the Emerald Pool, complete with 50ft waterfall plunging into a freshwater pool for swimming.

A more challenging option is located at Trafalgar Falls, another 15 minute walk through the rainforest in the Roseau River Valley which leads to these twin falls and swimming pool.

Other options include river tubing, sea kayaking, a visit to an adventure park or a Jeep safari.

Take a Rainforest Tram above the treetops in your own tram.

Try to spot the rare Sisserou Parrot among many other species found in Morne Diablotin National Park.

Cabrits National Park is one of the most impressive remnants of the Royal Navy in the Caribbean, this old fort housed over 700 men in its day.

Snorkelling can be found at Scotts Head Marine Reserve at the southern tip of the island.

Book a guide for an Indian River boat ride. This is one of the island's best bird-watching spots. To arrange for a guide, stop by the Portsmouth Visitor's Centre.

Take a driving tour of the Carib Territory, home to the native Dominican Indian tribe, nestled in a north-eastern corner of the island.

Spot the local humpback, sperm whales and orcas that live in Dominica's deep offshore waters on a boat trip.

The Dominica Museum, the Old Market and the Botanical Gardens are all close to the port of Roseau.

Dominica's national dish is the Mountain Chicken - a native giant frog, which is protected and can only be caught between autumn and February. Creole food is everywhere including callaloo soup, made from the tender central leaves of the dasheen plant.
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships can dock at two locations on Dominica. Portsmouth Dock is located in Prince Rupert Bay, on the north-western tip of the island. The other port, Roseau is around 30 miles away. Travel time between the two is around an hour.

Taxis are available at the dock.
