Overview Of The Port Of Ponta Delgada

About Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada is a city on the island of São Miguel in the archipelago of the Azores, in the North Atlantic Ocean.

In Ponta Delgada pavements are paved with black and white volcanic stones in distinctive patterns. The harbour front is lined with shops, cafes and restaurants. At the Praca GV Cabal, the square is enclosed on three sides and features a handsome, square clock tower.

The Convent of Esperanca and the Church of Santo Cristo are located in the town centre, near the Forte Sao Bras.

Fire Lake, set in a nature reserve can be seen from Pico de Barrosa and Siete Cidades Crater Lake can be viewed from the rim at Vista do Rei or at lake level from the village of Sete Cidades. The drive to the lakes takes you along coastal roads and through pretty villages with Catholic churches.

The island offers plenty of walking trails, maps are available at the tourist office in Ponta Delgada. Car hire is available to facilitate independent exploration.

Two tea plantations are located near Ribeira Grande on the north coast. Gorreana's European Tea Factory & Museum offers tea tastings and daily tours of the estate and gardens. The Porto Formoso Tea Factory also offers tours and tastings and focuses on the history of tea production in the Azores.

Other excursions include visits to Furnas Valley, the Hot Springs or a jeep safari.

Dolphin and whale spotting boat trips are available.

Local dishes include grilled seafood, 'arroz de marisco' (seafood rice), fish kababs and cod casserole with eggs and potatoes. For the sweet tooth, home-baked pastries can usually be found in cafes and as a dessert in restaurants.
