Overview Of The Port Of Ponce

About Ponce
Ponce is both a city and a municipality in the southern part of Puerto Rico, located in the north-eastern Caribbean.

The downtown area is compact and very attractive to explore on foot. Taxis are inexpensive and plentiful, however many museums and restaurants are within a very short distance of the central plaza.

Most of Ponce's sights are packed around the main square of Plaza las Delicias.

Places of interest include Casa Alcaldía (City Hall), Catedral de la Guadalupe (directly behind Parque de Bombas), Casa de la Masacre de Ponce and Centro Ceremonial Indígena de Tibes, an Indigenous Park about the Tainos (the pre-Columbian Island natives).

Museums include El Museo Castillo Serralles, Museum of Puerto Rican Music and Museo de Arte de Ponce.

Climb La Cruz del Vigia, a 100ft observation tower, for great views of the mountains and Caribbean Sea.

Parque de Bombas is the former fire station, which is painted with distinctive red and black stripes. The building houses the tourist office and a free exhibition of the history of fire fighters in Ponce. It is the departure point for the sightseeing train around the city.

La Guancha is Ponce's boardwalk, a good place to relax in one of the cafes and people watch. Amenities in the area include the beach, children's playground and an open air stage for musical events.

Caja de Muertos (Coffin Island) is an uninhabited island just off the coast where you can visit the old lighthouse, empty beaches and a marked underwater snorkel trail.

Hacienda Buena Vista Plantation, is a historic coffee plantation, which is now a museum.

El Tuque is a beach and family recreational and tourist complex in the Punta Cucharas sector of Ponce.

Watersports, scuba diving and snorkelling are all popular activities in the area.

Shopping opportunities can be found at Centro Comercial Plaza del Caribe, Centro del Sur Shopping Center and Fox Delicias Mall.

Puerto Rican dishes are well seasoned with a variety of spices. The base of many Puerto Rican main dishes involves 'sofrito', a sauté of freshly ground garlic, tomatoes, onions, and peppers.

'Butifarra' is Puerto Rican grilled sausage.

A wide range of fresh fish and seafood such as Puerto Rican red snapper, conch, marlin, mahi-mahi, shrimp and tuna fish can be found on menus as well as French, Spanish, Japanese, Mexican and Italian options.
Cruise Terminal
The port is 8km from the centre of town, taxis are often available.

In Ponce itself, public transport consists of modern air conditioned buses. There is also a tourist train which does a loop of the downtown area.

There have been discussions to build a new wharf in Ponce for cruise ships.
