Overview Of The Port Of Pointe des Galets

About Pointe des Galets
Pointe des Galets (or Le Port) is a cape in the north-west of the island of Réunion, which is a French island located in the Indian Ocean.

Le Port itself features long avenues bordered with palm trees and a pedestrianised shopping centre.

The still active volcano, Piton de la Fournaise and the three extinct craters known as cirques are a popular attraction. Their slopes are dotted with isolated villages. Piton des Neiges is the highest point on the island. (Note: the nearby Maison du Volcan (Volcano Museum) is closed on Mondays).

The State Garden is located in St Denis at the end of rue de Paris and contains hundreds of exotic plants and trees in 12 acres.

The seaside resort of St Gilles is around 12 miles south of the port. Here you will find a popular beach, watersports, shops, cafes, restaurants and an aquarium. This is where you will find good snorkelling and scuba diving areas.

Local handicrafts include vanilla, rum, spices, embroidery and items made from seashells. The main shopping area is located in the capital, St Denis. (Note: Shops are closed for their siesta from around lunchtime for a few hours).

There is a good choice of restaurants offering French, Indian, Chinese and Créole cuisine. Many dishes feature fish and seafood, cooked in either a curry or spicy tomato-based sauce.
