Overview Of The Port Of Penang

About Penang
Penang is a state in Malaysia and the name of its constituent island, located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia by the Strait of Malacca in south east Asia.

Penang Hill is a hill resort comprising a group of peaks. It is located in Air Itam, 6km from the city centre of George Town. Flagstaff Hill is the most developed peak. Take the Penang Hill Railway, a funicular railway from Air Itam to the top of Flagstaff Hill.

The Kek Lok Si Temple is a Buddhist temple situated in Air Itam and is one of the best known temples on the island. The temple has lots of shops at every level and inside the main temple complexes.

Penang Bridge is a dual carriageway toll bridge connecting George Town on Penang and Seberang Prai on the mainland of Malaysia. The total length of the bridge is 13.5km, making it the longest bridge in Malaysia.

The Penang Botanic Gardens, also known as the "Waterfall Gardens" because of the cascading waterfall nearby, is a public park situated on Jalan Air Terjun (Waterfall Road) in George Town. The original gardens were established in 1884 from an old quarry site.

Three popular shopping malls are Gurney Plaza, Prangin Mall and Queensbay. For more unusual items, head to the flea market at Lorong Kulit, open daily until 2pm.

Popular local dishes include noodle dish 'char kway teow' (stir fried ricecake strips), 'penang laksa' (spicy noodle soup) and 'nasi kandar' (steamed rice served with curries and side dishes).
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships dock at Swenttenham Pier on Penang island.

Taxis are available but agree a price beforehand as they almost never use meters. The bus service is infrequent and sometimes badly signposted.

Trishaws are perhaps the best way of sightseeing in the city, negotiate a price before setting off.
