Overview Of The Port Of Palm Island

About Palm Island
Palm Island (aka Palmtree Island) is located on the Great Barrier Reef. It is situated 65km north-west of Townsville, on the east coast of Queensland, Australia.

Great Palm Island is rich in natural beauty, both fauna and flora, however this has been impacted by human settlement. The island has a troubled and violent past, and visitors are advised not to wander alone after dark.

The rich volcanic soil supports mangroves, rainforests, mango, banana, papaya and wild plum trees. The surrounding bays have coral trout, crayfish and coral reefs. There has been significant dumping of pollution on the island.

This main island of the Greater Palm Group consists of small bays, steep forest mountains and sand beaches.

The ocean surrounding the island is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, where fishing is regulated.

Palm Island Arts Centre features vivid artwork depicting the dugong, crocodile and spirit totems of the island's different tribal clans.

Swimming, snorkelling and boat trips are popular activities.

There are many free roaming wild horses called ‘brumbies’ on the island, some have been domesticated and are used for show, trail and pleasure.

Palm Island is well known for its fresh and exotic seafood such as crayfish, lobster, snapper,
'beche de mer' (sea cucumber) and clams.
