Overview Of The Port Of Oban

About Oban
Oban is located on Stewart Island/Rakiura, the southernmost inhabited island of the New Zealand archipelago. Oban is located on Half Moon Bay (an alternative name for the town), on Paterson Inlet.

Oban is the only settlement on Stewart Island, a fishing town that also serves as a base for hikers and birdwatchers. Most of the island’s hiking tracks start here, others can be accessed by water taxi.

The Visitor Information Centre is located on Main Street. There are displays and videos about the Island.

Rakiura National Park is a nature reserve park covering about 85% of Stewart Island.

Boat trips, island and walking tours and kayaking are popular activities here.

There aren't many shops in Oban, however most have a range of souvenirs. Around 10 minutes from the centre is The Fernery, an art and craft gallery with an emphasis on natural history.

Expect to indulge in plenty of seafood - greenlipped mussels, lobster, Bluff oysters and fresh fish as well as famous New Zealand lamb.
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships dock in Half Moon Bay, a few minutes walk from the centre of town.
