Overview Of The Port Of Ny Alesund

About Ny Alesund
Ny-Ålesund is one of the four permanent settlements on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago in Norway.

The settlement here has a permanent population of scientists dedicated to researching, mapping and monitoring Norway’s polar landscape.

This untouched wilderness is home to massive glaciers, granite mountains and giant ice floes as well as polar bears and puffins.

Amundsen Memorial is dedicated to explorer Ronald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole and also cross the North Pole.

A kilometre long tourist trail leads visitors through Ny Alesund. The path is punctuated by story boards, which explain the purpose of the different science stations.

Post a letter from the world’s most northern post office.

The local museum houses exhibits of Ny-Ålseund’s history from the first establishment of the coal mining facility up to today’s international research community.

Note: Even though birds in Ny-Ålesund are used to people, visitors should stay on the roads and tracks. Do not feed the Arctic foxes and keep a distance because of the risk of rabies. There is a lot of research activity in town and the surrounding area. Visitors should stay away from research installations.
