Overview Of The Port Of Naples

About Naples
Naples is located on Italy's west coast and is the capital of Campania.

Pompeii is the most important historic site in this part of Italy. Herculaneum, which was also destroyed during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius but only been partially excavated is also worth a visit. Take a bus ride up the fabled Mount Vesuvius or visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, also known as the National Archaeological Museum.

Other historic sites in the city include the 13th century Castel Nuovo and the Palazzo Reale di Capodimonte, which was an 18th century palace and has now been restored and transformed.

The city's retail hub is a relatively easy 10 minute walk from the Stazione Maritima. Head past Castel Nuovo and up to Via Chiaia, a (mostly) pedestrian street lined with shops and bars.

Many shops sell quality antiques, porcelain and traditional Neapolitan masks.

Other places of interest include the island of Capri, located just across the Bay of Naples, has charming villages full of boutiques and cafes and the Blue Grotto, which is a fabulous sea cave (boats depart from the Marina Grande).

Pizza was first created in Naples and Pizza Napolitana (basil, garlic tomato and anchovy), Pasta e fagioli and Sartu di riso may all feature on local menus.
Cruise Terminal
Ships dock at Stazione Maritima, which is centrally located and you can walk right into town from here. There are a few very casual cafes in the adjacent car park and a small souvenir shops inside the terminal. Hydrofoils depart for Capri from Marina Grande.

Traffic can be extremely busy and fraught, not only in Naples itself but also along the Amalfi coast.

Taxis are available in the city but make sure they are 'official' and agree a price before setting off.
