Overview Of The Port Of Mumbai

About Mumbai
Mumbai (formerly Bombay), is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour.

The Gateway of India is an ornate arch built to celebrate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to what was then Bombay in December 1911.

The nearby Taj Mahal hotel is an attraction in its own right as everyone wants their picture taken with the bearded doorkeepers in their white uniforms and turbans.

Marine Drive, which is Mumbai's seaside promenade, passes Chowpatty Beach and Malabar Hill. Look out for the Parsi Tower of Silence, where people of the Parsi faith who die are laid out to be eaten by birds of prey and their bones left to disintegrate so they wash into the sea.

Mani Bhavan, known as the Gandhi Museum, is a shrine to the man who won independence for India.

Visit the Jain Temple in Malabar, considered the prettiest temple in Mumbai. Two stone elephants adorn the entrance, inside there is an ornate domed ceiling painted with signs of the zodiac. The Hanging Gardens in Malabar offer great views over the city.

Crawford Market is packed with stalls selling fruits and vegetables.

Other attractions include Mahalakshmi Temple, dedicated to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and beauty and Shree Siddhivinayak Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed god.

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Sastu Sangrahalaya (formerly the Prince of Wales Museum) houses a huge collection of artefacts, weapons and paintings.

The Elephanta Caves, 10km off the east coast of the city, are a designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They form a temple dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Shiva and are believed to have been carved between the 9th and 13th centuries.

Curry is the main highlight here, although seafood, kebabs, salads and pizzas can also be found.
Cruise Terminal
The cruise terminal is located at Ballard Pier, a 5-10 minutes drive of local attractions.

The terminal has a lounge, duty free shop, handicraft stalls and toilets.

As you exit the port, there will be lots of taxis waiting, desperate for your business. The further away from the port you get, the price should come down! You will get an even better deal still if you find a taxi out on the street. However, steer clear of unregistered taxis with no sign.

Should you wish to hire a taxi driver for the day to tour the city, you will need to haggle over the price.
