Overview Of The Port Of Melila

About Melila
Melilla is a Spanish city on the north coast of Morocco, the most westerly of the north African countries.

The city layout is arranged in a wide semi-circle around the beach and the Port of Melilla, on the eastern side of the peninsula of Cape Tres Forcas, at the foot of Mount Gurugú.

Ciudadela de Melilla was a fortress built during the 15th century on a rock mass that connected to the mainland by a small strip of land. The Caves of Conventico were excavated into the rock to act as a refuge during attacks.

There are several museums here including the Museum of Archaeology and History of Melilla, the Military Museum and the Museum Amazigh, which has a collection of ancient ceramics and jewellery.

A good place to relax is in Hernandez Park, which is filled with exotic plants and palm trees.

Melilla's Capilla de Santiago (James's Chapel), by the city walls, is the only genuine Gothic architecture in Africa.

Melilla has several sandy beaches and watersports such as sailing and windsurfing can be found near to the port.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are available in the many markets. Crafts, souvenirs, ceramics, jewellery and leather goods make good gifts.

Menus are a mix of both Spanish and Arabic offerings. 'Tapas' and fish and seafood specialities such as whitebait, fresh anchovies, squid, sardines, lobster, crayfish, prawns, mussels and clams can be found in most restaurants. 'Pincho Melillense' (lamb roasted on a spit) accompanied by a mint tea that can only be found in this city, or couscous are other recommended dishes to try here.
