Lulea

Luleå is a coastal city and the capital of Norrbotten County, Sweden, Scandinavia. The water along the Norrbotten coast is unique, it is a mix of both fresh and salt water.

Take a boat trip to the Luleå archipelago, Klubbviken on the island of Sandön has a nice beach.

Gammelstad is the old church village and originally the main city. The church was built in 1492. You will find some good restaurants, shops selling local crafts and an open air museum here.

Teknikens Hus is a science centre and 'hands on' museum, located at the campus of Luleå University of Technology.

Kulturens Hus contains the Tourist Office, library, Hall of Art, concert halls and restaurants.

Junkön Archipelago Museum gives a glimpse of how people lived on the islands many years ago. Old tools, utensils and other cultural history artefacts are exhibited here. A boat engine museum is just next door.

The small Norrbottens Museum (various opening hours), Luleå Cathedral, built in neo-Gothic style, the railway museum in Karlsvik and Bälingeberget Nature Reserve are other attractions of note.

The shopping thoroughfare in Luleå is 10km long and stretches from Luleå, via Luleå Home Center (on the road between Luleå and Storhedento), Storheden and Gammelstad. The town centre features both larger shopping centres, shops, as well as many specialised stores. Storheden is one of Sweden's five most popular retail parks.

Restaurants have a range of options from local dishes such as reindeer, char (fish), smoked whitefish and homemade lingonberry bread to Thai, sushi, steakhouses, American and even good old pub grub.

Cruise ships dock at the Port of Luleå, which is around a 15 minute walk from the centre of town.

Taxis are available for either short journeys or guided tours of the area.

Another option is the fast and inexpensive local buses (LLT) which can be used to visit different parts of the city.
