Overview Of The Port Of Lifou

About Lifou
Lifou is a commune of France in the Loyalty Islands Province of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean.

Enjoy a scenic drive across the island of Lifou to the rugged north coast. The small village of Jokin, offers spectacular views of its cliffs.

At the Vanilla house, learn about the cultivation, preparation and history behind the plantation and the vanilla pods of the Loyalty Islands. Enjoy a stroll through the plantation and tropical forest to see the Oni Wael wildlife then visit the vanilla processing plant.

Enjoy a guided walk amongst native flora to view the different plant species.

Close to the tender spot, under a large thatched hut, a few locals will be selling items such as food and souvenirs.

Much of the food in New Caledonia is based on French-style cooking, you’ll also find many international cuisine styles such as Indonesian, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Vietnamese, Spanish and African. Seafood meals are a speciality and feature fresh local food such as prawns and octopus as well as reef fish and deep-sea fish.

Bougna is the traditional Melanesian dish, it's a combination of chicken, lobster or fish with yams, bananas, sweet potatoes and coconut milk wrapped in banana leaves. Bougna is served with a variety of other dishes, including seafood, coconut milk and tropical fruit.

Another local dish is 'civet de rousette' or bat stew, a favourite with the locals.
