About Jan Mayen
Jan Mayen is a volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean and part of the Kingdom of Norway. It is partly covered by glaciers and lies 1,000km west of the North Cape, in Norway.

There is no native population on this tiny island, the only inhabitants are personnel working for the Norwegian Armed Forces or the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Access to the island is limited.

Beerenberg is a stratovolcano and the northern-most active volcano on Earth. The volcano is mostly covered by glaciers and it forms the north-end of Jan Mayen Island. Beerenberg has erupted six times between 1732 and 1985.

Jan Mayen is home to many species of seabirds including puffins and fulmars, you may also spot whales and seals.
