Overview Of The Port Of Isla de Coiba

About Isla de Coiba
Coiba Island is off the Pacific coast of the Panamanian province of Veraguas, Central America.

The Coiba National Marine Park consists of Coiba island (the largest island in Central America) and 37 surrounding islands and islets.

In 1919 a penal colony was built on Coiba. The prison had a reputation for brutal conditions and extreme torture and was avoided by locals, subsequently staying completely undeveloped.

The prison was closed down in 2004 and the island was declared a National Park in 1992. In 2005 UNESCO declared the entire Coiba National Park a World Heritage Site.

The area is excellent for divers and snorkelers wanting to see the abundant sealife, which includes dolphins, whales, turtles and many species of tropical fish.

Jaguars, Coiba howler monkeys and scarlet macaws can also be spotted on the island.

Fishing trips, whale watching and hiking are also popular excursions.

There are no restaurants on Coiba.
