IJmuiden is a port city in the Dutch province of North Holland and is the main town in the municipality of Velsen. It is located at the mouth of the North Sea Canal to Amsterdam.

Fort Island was built at the end of the 19th century to protect the sea locks. There are still numerous bunkers on the island from WWII.

IJmuiden has various shops selling souvenirs, the latest branded clothing and crafts.

IJmuiden aan Zee has one of the nicest beaches in the Noord Holland province. The extremely wide beach has 4 pavilions and the Seaport Marina provides direct access to the sea with restaurants and shops nearby.

The beach at the Noordpier (‘North Pier’) is popular with windsurfers and surfers. There is also kite surfing, land sailing and kite buggying here.

Many visitors head to Amsterdam, which is only a 30-45 minute drive away.

There are themed restaurants such as seafood, Italian, Greek, Indian and Chinese. Popular Dutch dishes include 'hutspot' (potatoes, carrots & onions served with meat) and 'zuurkoolstamppot' (sauerkraut mashed with potatoes, served with fried bacon or sausage).
