Overview Of The Port Of Hamburg

About Hamburg
Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany. Hamburg is located on the southern point of the Jutland Peninsula, directly between Continental Europe to its south and Scandinavia to its north.

Scenic cruises are popular in Hamburg. Visitors can choose between cruises around the harbour or on the Alster lake.

St Michaelis Church was completed in 1762. It features a vaulted crypt and viewing tower.

Hamburger Kunsthalle is the city's major art museum, with exhibits ranging from Hamburg artists of the 14th century to modern art.

The International Maritime Museum has 10 floors of exhibits, including a collection of thousands of tiny ship models, full-size ship models, oil paintings of naval ships and naval exhibits.

Miniatur Wunderland is the largest model railway layout in the world and is spread over two floors with sections devoted to Hamburg and its port, Germany's Harz Mountains, Scandinavia, Switzerland and the United States.

The Neo-Renaissance City Hall, built between 1886 and 1897, offers daily tours at varying times of the day.

The main shopping street is Monckebergstrasse (the Mo), which runs from the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) to the city hall market square (Rathausmarkt). Alsterarkaden offers smaller speciality shops and outdoor cafes and restaurants. Neuer Wall is the most upscale street for famous designers, such as Gucci and Vuitton.

Many restaurants feature local seafood (Atlantic cod, plaice, mackerel, sole, crab, lobster and shrimp) and typical German-style sausages such as weisswurst, bratwurst and knockwurst. International cuisine is also widely available.
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships can dock in one of two areas.

HafenCity cruise terminal - the downtown area of Hamburg is within walking distance from here.

Elbe River berth at the Altona terminal has plenty of cafes and shops nearby along the Elbmeile. However, the city centre isn't really walkable so taxis, shuttles or the city bus which passes along Grosse Elbstrasse, parallel to the River Elbe are better options.
