Overview Of The Port Of Haines

About Haines
Haines is located in Alaska, in the United States of America. It is in the northern part of the Alaska Panhandle, near Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve.

Fort William H. Seward is a National Historic Site and is situated on a hill above the dock. Many of the buildings are former barracks and officers' quarters. In the centre of the parade grounds is a replica of a Tlingit tribal house. The former fort hospital is now the Alaska Indian Arts Cultural Centre.

The Sheldon Museum and Cultural Centre houses a collection of Haines memorabilia including Tlingit artefacts, gold rush-era objects and military items.

The quirky Hammer Museum features 1,500 tools from all over the world including an 800 year old Tlingit hammer.

The American Bald Eagle Foundation Natural History Museum features a huge diorama depicts more than 150 bald eagles. There are also stuffed specimens including bears in the educational displays.

The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve is a 48,000-acre park located along the Chilkat River. The best viewing sights are on the Haines Highway between miles 19 and 26.

Guided bike tours and bicycle hire is available near the dock area.

The Valley of the Eagles Golf Links & Driving Range is located about 2 miles from downtown. The turf is artificial. The scenery includes salmon and trout streams running through the course and moose and bears are occasionally spotted. Rental clubs are available and reservations are recommended.

Popular buys include freshly smoked Alaska salmon and halibut, art, jewellery and local crafts, wood carvings, gold items and fabrics.

Seafood is the centrepiece of Alaskan cuisine and is often served as smoked salmon, cured salmon and salmon jerky. Many large game animals such as moose, caribou or elk are eaten outside of the main cities. Reindeer sausage and Alaskan King Crabs are also widely available.
