Overview Of The Port Of Grand Cayman

About Grand Cayman
Grand Cayman is the largest of the Cayman Islands, situated about 100 miles south of Cuba, in the Western Caribbean.

Popular excursions include Stingray City, island tour, catamaran sail, Cayman Turtle Farm and Dolphin Discovery (the latter two are next to each other).

Take an underwater Nautilus, Atlantis Submarine or jeep tour.

Museums include Pedro St James National History Museum, the Cayman Motor Museum on West Bay, the Cayman Island National Museum and the National Art Gallerie of the Cayman Islands.

For novelty value, stop off in Hell, a group of short, black, limestone formations located in West Bay, roughly the size of half a football field. People are not allowed amongst the limestone formations but viewing platforms are available for visitors. You can also send a postcard from "Hell" at the Post Office and buy some souvenirs.

George Town has numerous shops featuring handcrafted jewellery, antiques, salvaged coins and old maps. Cardinal Avenue is the main shopping street, other choices include Kirk Freeport, The Jewellery Centre and the Galleria Plaza on West Bay Road. Popular buys include jewellery, watches and rum cake.

7 Mile Beach on the west coast, is considered one of best beaches here, with lovely blue water and soft sand.

Local dishes range from curried goat and braised oxtail to many conch based dishes.
Cruise Terminal
At present, all ships required to anchor in the harbour and tender passengers onto the island. There are two docks in George Town (North and South), both are located right in town. It is an easy walk to the local shops and restaurants.

On occasion, if the weather is particularly bad, cruise ships may miss this port out altogether.

The main bus area is located by Edward Street, close to the main street. Journeys in air conditioned buses can be taken from here to local attractions such as Hell, the Turtle Farm, 7 Mile Beach and the Queen Elizabeth Botanic Park.

Taxis are available at the harbour.

Occasionally, due to inclement weather, ships may anchor in another location and transport passengers to George Town.
