Overview Of The Port Of Foynes

About Foynes
Foynes is a village in County Limerick in the mid-west of Ireland, located on the southern bank of the Shannon Estuary.

The Foynes Flying Boat Museum chronicles the brief era when the famous Pan Am Clippers used Foynes as their gateway to Europe and back to the USA. It houses numerous exhibits showing the history of this era and it's impact on the town of Foynes.

A short drive away lies Listowel, a typical Irish market town with numerous shops and restaurants.

Most visitors head to Limerick, around 35km away.

Places of interest include the University of Limerick, Lough Gur Visitor Centre and St Mary's Cathedral, the oldest building in Limerick.

The Hunt Museum is one of Ireland's greatest private collections of art and antiquities, dating from the Neolithic to the 20th Century.

Limerick City Gallery of Art, located near the Tate Clock and Perry Square gardens features contemporary art and exhibitions.

King John's Castle is located on King's Island, next to the River Shannon. The walls, towers and fortifications remain today and the remains of a Viking settlement were uncovered during the construction of a visitor centre at the site.

A famous landmark here is the Treaty Stone, which commemorates the Treaty of Limerick signed in 1691. It is located opposite King John's Castle.

Ballyhoura Country is a walker's paradise offering spectacular walking in a variety of unspoilt landscapes.

Local Irish dishes include Irish stew, bacon and cabbage, potato, 'boxty' (potato pancake), 'coddle' (various recipes but typically contains sausages, bacon, potatoes and onions), and 'colcannon' (cabbage and potato dish).
