Edinburgh of the Seven Seas

Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is the main settlement of Tristan da Cunha island, in Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, in the South Atlantic Ocean.

Inaccessible Island is an extinct volcano and is a protected wildlife reserve, designated as a United Nations-controlled World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The island has many native plant species, and Sub-Antarctic Fur Seals, Southern Elephant Seals Southern Right Whales and Dusky Dolphins have also been spotted around the island. The Inaccessible Rail, the world's smallest living flightless bird lives here and the island is an important breeding site for many sea and land birds.

Jamestown is the capital and historic chief settlement of Saint Helena. The French Emperor Napoleon was exiled on St Helena from 1815 until he died in 1821. The Napoleonic properties of Longwood House, the Briars Pavilion and Napoleon's Tomb can all be visited.

Plantation House is the residence of the island's Governor and occasional tours of the House are offered. Jonathan, the world's oldest living animal - a giant tortoise who is around 180 years old, also resides here. The Paddock where the tortoises live is open during daylight hours.

The Cenotaph displays the names of islanders who lost their lives in World War II.

St Helena has the oldest public library in the Southern Hemisphere.

Some of the island's endemic plants can be seen at Castle Gardens.

Jacobs Ladder was built in 1829 as an inclined plane. The ladder is 600ft high and has 699 steps. Once you have completed the ladder, make sure you buy your souvenir certificate from the Museum.

St James Church is the oldest Anglican church in the southern hemisphere dating back to 1774.

The Museum of St Helena has been beautifully restored in a late 18th century building, which opened on 21st May 2002 to mark St Helena's 500th anniversary.

At St Helena Distillery, discover the delights of Tungi spirit, White Lion rum, Midnight Mist coffee liqueur and the Island's own Juniper flavoured gin.

The Heart-Shaped Waterfall is located at the top of James Valley. A trail has recently opened giving access to the foot of the waterfall. The trail starts from Drummond's Point on the Barnes road track. The flow over the fall is seasonal.

The present High Knoll Fort dates from 1874 on the site of the original citadel built in 1798. The Fort has superb views across much of the Island and is open occasionally for guided tours.

Other nearby places of interest include St Paul's Cathedral and Cemetery, built in 1851, Diana's Peak National Park and Deadwood Plain, the site of Boer Prisoners of War camp and home to the Islands only Endemic bird - the wirebird.
