About Dunedin
Dunedin is the second largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, and the principle city of the Otago Region.
The Octagon is the heart and centre of Dunedin, many sights including shops and the tourist information office are within walking distance. St Paul's Cathedral was built using Oamaru stone and the Edwardian Railway Station is decorated with stained glass windows and has a mosaic floor.
Buses depart from The Octagon, taxis are also available from this location.
Otago Museum explores the region's rich cultural past and present. It's one of the most complete collections of Maori knowledge on the South Island.
The Dunedin Public Art Gallery's collection focuses on contemporary painting and photography and also features changing exhibits.
Cadbury World offers factory tours, liquid chocolate waterfalls and chocolate tastings.
Speight's Brewery offer interactive tours about New Zealand's first beer, brewed here since the late 1800's.
The only castle in New Zealand - Larnach Castle is situated on a hilltop 12km from the city centre and offers stunning views over the Dunedin Bay and the ocean. The castle only has a dozen or so rooms, not all open to the public.
Taieri Gorge Railway has daily departures from the city's railway station and travels over cast-iron bridges and tunnels built in 1879, to the scenic river gorge.
New Zealand is known for its lamb and fresh seafood dishes. Local dishes have also been influenced by tastes from around the world, including kumara curry (kumara is a kind of sweet potato), mussel and fish curry, lamb chops and rump steak.
