Overview Of The Port Of Cephalonia

About Cephalonia
The island of Cephalonia or Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece. Argostoli is it's capital.

Vallianos Square is surrounded by shops, tavernas and bars. South of the square is Lithostroto, the pedestrian-only main shopping street.

The Archaeological Museum has artefacts from Mycenean to Roman times.

The Korgialeneio History and Folk Art Museum includes many displays showing the island prior to the earthquake in 1953.

Popular photo spots include the Doric-style lighthouse, which was re-built after the earthquake and the De Bosset Bridge, originally built of wood in the early 19th century, but replaced a few years later with stone.

St Georges Castle sits on a hill south of Argostoli, in a village called Kastro and was built over 1,600 years ago.

Other attractions include Melissani Lake, Drogarati Cavern, the fishing villages of Sami and Fiskardo and glass bottom boat trips.

The most famous beach on the island is Myrtos, within a large bay on the northern coast of the island. Markis Gialos beach is very close to Argostoli and has many tavernas and watersports available. Families enjoy Xi beach to the south of Lixouri, with it's shallow and calm waters.

Local dishes include various Kefalonian pies filled with rice, meat, leek and spinach, vegetables, cod and octopus, 'bourbourelia' (soup), 'strapatsada' (eggs with tomatoes, fried in olive oil, salt and pepper) and 'galaktompoureko' (kind of custard tart).
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships dock in Argostoli, the capital of the island. If the pier is busy, ships may anchor and tender passengers ashore. It's around a 10 minute walk to most of the town's attractions.
