Overview Of The Port Of Cape Town

About Cape Town
Cape Town is the provincial capital of the Western Cape in South Africa. It is located on the shore of Table Bay.

Table Mountain is the image most closely associated with Cape Town. Almost always blanketed by a "tablecloth" of clouds, it offers views of Table Bay, Robben Island, the Cape Flats and Cape Peninsula. Take the 10 minute cable car ride to the summit and go whenever the weather is good. This entire area is part of Table Mountain National Park, there are many hiking trails to suit levels of fitness.

To learn more about South Africa's apartheid-tainted past, visit Robben Island.

There are more than 2,500 penguins in the Boulders colony, near Simonstown (40 minutes south of Cape Town). The best viewing spots are Boulders Beach or Foxy Beach, from a raised boardwalk.

For something a bit different, conservationists from Baboon Matters offer walking tours

In Cape Town, there's a variety of shops, look out for pottery, beadwork, woodcarvings, wire baskets and sculptures.

On Long Street, there are many unique shops and restaurants, along with the indoor Pan Africa Market offering woodcarvings, jewellery and paintings.

South Africa is known for its diamonds and gold jewellery. Victoria Wharf is home to several reputable jewellers.

There are many tasty options available on menus ranging from seafood (prawns, lobster, calamari and mussels), fish and chips and prime rib, to lamb and Cape Malay style of cooking - curry dishes, bobotie (minced meat, brown sugar, raisins, and apricots) and samosas.
Cruise Terminal
Most cruise ships dock at Table Bay Harbour, within walking distance of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is a focal point of Cape Town and is home to 400 shops, restaurants, hotels, Two Oceans Aquarium, and the Iziko South African Maritime Museum.

Taxis are available at the dock and are a good way of seeing the city.
