Overview Of The Port Of Aomori

About Aomori
Aomori is the capital city of Aomori Prefecture, in the northern Tōhoku region of Japan in East Asia.

The Aomori Museum of Art is located just outside of downtown Aomori City. The building houses both temporary and permanent exhibits and includes the huge 8.5m tall Aomori-Ken dog statue by Nara.

Next to the Art Museum is Sannai-Maruyama, which was accidentally discovered during construction of a baseball stadium. Excavations have revealed artefacts and structures dating back 5500 years to the Jomon period.

The upper reaches of the Oirase river form a scenic gorge with numerous rapids and waterfalls, and is one of the major tourist attractions of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park.

The Aomori Asamushi Aquarium may be a good option for families with children.

Mashumaru was one of the Seikan railway ferries that operated between Hokkaido and Honshu until 1988. It is now moored at the Hakodate port as a memorial and visitors can take a self guided tour.

Asamushi Spa is a short train ride from Aomori (make sure you do not take the express train as it does not stop here). This hot spring resort has some interesting rock formations close by and more picturesque scenery.

Just 30 minutes by express train west of Aomori is the castle town of Hirosaki, which besides its huge castle grounds famous for their thousands of cherry trees, has a number of Edo Period wooden houses, a collection of Meiji-era buildings, the Fujita memorial Garden, a Botanical Garden within the castle park and some lovely temples including the five-story pagoda at Saisho-in.

The main districts for shopping in Aomori are the areas around the train station and along Shinmachi Street. Shinmachi Street has a number of antique and local craft stores and the Sakurano, Beny Mart and Nakasan shopping centres.

Apple cider, sake, woodwork, Kokeshi dolls, Koginsashi embroidery, lacquerware, ceramics and marine products all make good gift ideas.

Local beef, sushi and scallops are firm favourites on menus. Regional dishes include Kenoshiru (stew flavoured with miso) and Herring īzushi (either dried or pickled in vinegar).
Cruise Terminal
Cruise ships dock at the Port of Aomori, which lies on the shores of Matsu Bay in northern Honshu, the main and largest island of Japan. The city centre is only a few minutes away.

The train station is around a 15 minute walk away from the port area.

Note: the left rear door of taxis are remotely operated by the drivers. There is no requirement to tip taxi drivers and it's best to have an exact address to show as the local address system here is confusing even for taxi drivers!
