About Alta
Alta is a town in Alta Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway, Scandinavia.
The Alta Museum presents exhibitions on local culture and historic industries. Nearby you will also find the Rock Art of Alta, petroglyphs (carvings) which bears the traces of a settlement dating from c. 4200 to 500 B.C.

The Northern Lights Cathedral (Nordlyskatedralen) is the main parish church, located in the central part of town. It was built in 2012-2013 as a result of an architectural competition. The church was built to replace the old Alta Church.
During World War II, the German battle ship Tirpitz was stationed in Kåfjord. Tirpitz was attacked several times and due to severe damage, finally sunk. Tirpitz museum is dedicated to the ship and it's history, the museum also has models and other war objects. Outside is a memorial statue of rock slate from Alta. (Opening hours: June 1st-September 1st, 10.00-6.00pm).
Take a riverboat excursion along the Alta River up to the Sautso-Alta Canyon, which, at 400m is the "Grand Canyon" of northern Europe. Reindeer and other local wildlife can sometimes be spotted along the way.
Local handcrafts such as Sami carvings in bone or wood, knitted items such as jumpers, hats and scarves and jewellery all make popular gifts.
Local specialities include reindeer, king crab and cloudberry mousse. International options such as Indian, Italian and Chinese can also be found.
