Albany

Albany is a city in the Great Southern region of Western Australia.

Torndirrup National Park offers some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in Australia.

The Gap and Natural Bridge. The Gap, a 24m drop to the sea, and the Natural Bridge, a monumental span of granite, demonstrate the awesome power of the sea when a heavy swell is running.

Jimmy Newells Harbour is a tiny natural harbour named after a fisherman caught in a sudden storm and driven into this shelter.

Stony Hill Lookout has 360 degree views taking in the Southern Ocean and Albany. A World War II naval radio station was once located here.

The Blow Holes are a series of fissures in the granite rocks on the coast, which make loud hissing noises and act like geysers when water is forced by large waves through the rocks.

Whale World is the only museum in the world created from a working whaling station.

The famous granite Dog Rock at the side of the road to Middleton Beach, bears an uncanny resemblance to the head of a labrador dog.

Vancouver Arts Centre is now used for painting, spinning, weaving, stained glass, pottery, workshops and more. The gallery houses a variety of exhibitions open to the public.

Princess Royal Fortress has restored shore batteries, armouries, barracks, the 10th Light Horse display, trails and a collection of naval guns and torpedoes.

The main shopping area is in the centre of town, jewellery and gems are popular buys.

The Middleton beach area is a few kilometres away the town centre.

Australian cuisine features seafood such as Southern bluefin tuna, King George whiting, Moreton Bay bug, Mud Crab, Jew Fish, Dhufish (Western Australia) and Yabby.

Well known snacks include Vegemite, Violet Crumble, Tim Tams (chocolate biscuit) and Lamingtons (coconut sponge cake).

The port is located on the north shore of Princess Royal Harbour.

The Albany Port provides a free shuttle bus service to take passengers to and from town, around 1½km away although it is walkable.
